Abstract:
This raster dataset contains a combination county (FIPS) codes and Virginia Gap Analysis (VAGAP) habitat codes that is the basis for VAGAP predicted potential species distribution. County range information and habitat preference were used to model the predicted distribution of each terrestrial vertebrate species native to or naturalized within Virginia. An associated table, which contains a column for each of the 568 VAGAP terrestrial vertebrate species, can be joined to this raster to indicate which species is predicted to potentially occur at any one area (specific combination of county and habitat).
Purpose:
This is an output of the Virginia Gap Anaylsis project (VAGAP). The purpose of this dataset is to show predicted potential distribution of VAGAP species within Virginia. This dataset can be use to assess predicted potential species distribuiton on a statewide scale. This raster is the basis for the VAGAP species richness data layers
Supplemental_Information:
This raster is an update of the analysis completed in 'A Gap Analysis of Virginia: 2001 Final Report'. More accurate species range information was used in this updated version. However, species-habitat relationships did not change.

Data and database structure were orginially developed by Scott Klopfer and others at the Conservation Management Institute. Vertebrate species range information were reviewed by taxonomic experts throughout Virginia. Range updates were applied by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF).

Process_Description:
A raster grid of couny FIPS codes were concatenated with a raster grid of Virginia Gap Analysis (VAGAP) habitat or land cover, yeilding a unique numeric code. Individual species county range information and habitat use were determined from information in the Biota of Virginia (BOVA) database in the Virginia Fish and Wildlife Information System (VAFWIS). A table with a column for each individual VAGAP species and a row for each combination of county and habitat was created. When this table is linked to the Forspp raster, the distribution of any of the 568 VAGAP species can be displayed geographically.
