Abstract:
This raster image displays the number of species (or richness) considered "Underprotected" predicted to potentially occur in any area. This is a product of the Virginia Gap Analysis Project (VAGAP). All species predicted potential distribution was compared with information about protected lands. Protected lands are state, federal, and local government owned lands with some mandate for protecting open space. Protected lands were derived from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Conservation Lands Database. Species with less than 10% of their predicted potential distribution in protected areas were considered "underprotected". Out of 568 species assessed in the Virginia Gap Analysis, 148 were underprotected (~26%). The Underprotected layer shows where the most underprotected species are likely to occur. The highest underprotected richness, 76 species, occurs in southeastern Virginia. The lowest underprotected species richness is in the mountains of western Virginia.
Purpose:
This is an output of the Virginia Gap Anaylsis project (VAGAP). The purpose of this image is to show patterns of species richness across Virginia for underprotected species. This dataset can be use to assess biodiversity and and target land for protection on a statewide scale.

This raster is an update of the analysis completed in 'A Gap Analysis of Virginia: 2001 Final Report'. More accurate species range information was used in this updated version. However, species-habitat relationships did not change.

Data and database structure were orginially developed by Scott Klopfer and others at the Conservation Management Institute. Vertebrate species range information were reviewed by taxonomic experts throughout Virginia. Range updates were applied the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF). The Conservation Lands Database developed by Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation - Division of Natural Heritage was used to represent protected areas.

Process_Description:
Individual species county range information and habitat use were determined and then mapped. Predicted potential distributions were then compared to protected habitat areas (Conservation Lands Database). Areas were computed of total predicted potential distribution and predicted potential habitat in a protected area. If less than 10% of a species' predicted potential distribution was located in a protected area, it was considered underprotected. There were 148 "underpotected" species resulting from this analysis. The VAGAP predicted potential species distribution was used to sum the number of potential underprotected species at each 30m cell throughout Virginia.
